Work With Blue Barn Creative

Three ways in: apply to join our freelance crew list, get on set as a PA, or bring us in as your production team.

Blue Barn Creative is a 9x Emmy® Award-winning video production agency in San Diego, founded in 2012 and led by Carlos Foster and Stephen Alberts. We make brand films, corporate video, commercials, and event coverage for clients here and across the country. We stay small on purpose. Every project is crewed to fit, which is exactly why this page exists.

01 · Freelance Crew

Join Our Freelance Crew List

Blue Barn crews up per project. When a shoot needs a second camera operator, an editor, a motion designer, a photographer, or a voiceover artist, we go to our crew list before we post anywhere public. Getting on that list is the whole game.

We look for three things: strong work, how you treat people on set, and whether you show up when you say you will. Only one of those fits on a reel. So instead of asking for a resume, we ask a few short questions and a link to the work you are most proud of.

One note on reels: short beats long. Six strong shots in sixty seconds tell us more than three minutes of everything you have ever filmed.

02 · Breaking In

Breaking Into Production

This section is for the people who email us about internships, shadowing, and PA work. We read every one of those messages, so here is the honest answer we give: we do not run a formal internship program, and we rarely take shadows. We are a small, owner-led shop, and on our shoots everyone on the call sheet has a job.

But there is a way in. When a production needs a production assistant, we hire from the people who have introduced themselves on this page. PA work is how almost everyone we respect got started, including us. It is not glamorous. It is also the fastest film school there is.

If that sounds right, introduce yourself below. Tell us where you are at, what you want to learn, and a video you love. The effort you put into the form is the first audition.

03 · Agency Partners

For Agencies Without In-House Production

Marketing agencies, brand consultants, and fractional CMOs bring in Blue Barn Creative when their clients need video they cannot produce in-house. You keep the client relationship. We handle production: scoping, story, crew, shoot days, and the edit. With our name on it or without it.

Your client is going to ask for video this year. Saying “we don’t really do that” sends them shopping, and whoever they find gets a seat at the table you built. A production partner means you say yes, the work gets made well, and the relationship stays yours.

We have been the team behind other people’s promises since 2012, and the work has won nine Emmy® Awards along the way. When we partner with an agency, your client sees your team delivering. That is the point.

How This Works

Three Steps, No Guessing

1

Fill out the form.

One form, about three minutes. The first question asks who you are and routes you from there.

2

We read it and file it.

Every submission gets read by Stephen or Carlos. Crew and PA submissions go onto the roster we pull from when we staff a shoot.

3

We reach out when it fits.

Crew and PA folks hear from us when a project matches. Silence in between is normal. Partner inquiries usually get a reply within a few business days.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions

Is Blue Barn Creative hiring right now?

Blue Barn Creative does not have staff openings. We are a small, owner-led agency in San Diego and we crew each project from our freelance list. The way to work with us is to get on that list through the form on this page.

Does Blue Barn Creative offer internships?

No. Blue Barn Creative does not run a formal internship program. When a production needs a production assistant, we hire from the people who have introduced themselves through this page, so a strong submission is the real entry point.

What should a reel or portfolio show?

Show the work you want to be hired for, and keep it short. A sixty-second reel of your strongest shots tells us more than three minutes of everything you have filmed. One finished piece you are proud of beats a montage.

Does Blue Barn Creative partner with marketing agencies?

Yes. Blue Barn Creative works as a production partner for marketing agencies, consultants, and fractional CMOs. You keep the client relationship, and we handle scoping, filming, and editing, either white-label or with our name on it.

Do you only work with San Diego crew?

Most of our shoots happen in San Diego, so local crew gets called first. Blue Barn Creative also travels for clients and keeps a short list of trusted crew in other cities, so freelancers outside San Diego are welcome on the list.

When will I hear back after submitting?

Every submission gets read, but we only reach out when a project fits, so you may not hear from us right away. Partner inquiries are the exception and usually get a reply within a few business days.
